Update: 2013 UFL Cup Re-Draw as FIVE teams pull out + My Quick Thoughts

From UFL Media Manager Jing Jamlang:

In the past few days, several clubs have backed out from the 2013/14UFL Cup after the draw held last Friday, 20 September 2013.

To date, Manila Tala FC, PSG FC, Manila Hurricanes FC and Mendiola FC 1991 together with Nomads FC have withdrawn from the UFL Cup.  This now brings the total number of clubs participating in the UFL Cup to 23.
There will be a re-draw of the groups for the 2013/14 UFL Cup on Wednesday, 2 October 2013 at 6:30 PM at the UFL Office.

Following the same system employed during the first draw, the 23 clubs will be re-drawn into 5 groups - 3 groups (Groups A, C and E) with 5 clubs each and 2 groups (Groups B and D) with 4 clubs each.

The groups will play a single round robin with the Top 3 from all groups plus , the best 4th place from among Groups A, C and E will advance to the Round of 16.

To Summarize:

a.) 2013 UFL Cup will have FIVE Groups.

-- THREE (3) Groups of Five Clubs
-- TWO (2) Groups of Four Clubs.

b.) Top THREE from ALL Groups will advance + Best Fourth Place finisher in the three groups with five clubs.

c.) Three clubs x Five groups PLUS best fourth place finisher = 16 teams.

d.) 16 teams will make the round of 16 -- for the Knockout Rounds.

---------------------------------------------

Why did the teams pull out?

Nomads couldn't comply with the new foreigner rule limit.

As for Tala, PSG, Manila Hurricanes and Mendiola FC, this is all what the UFL said, as of now:

"Certain teams withdrew because of an inability to field a competitive team, while others could not comply with all the necessary requirements."

---------------------------------------------

My take:

Shouldn't you first sort out your own stuff before actually expressing an intent to join a competition? Was it only after participating in the draw did they realize that they have the 'inability to field a competitive team'?

The UFL's  "Necessary requirements", presumably, have been stated even before the draw took place.

I am very sorry to say this, but I am very disappointed with what has happened. The integrity of the competition and the league is being torn to shreds, and after the U23 exclusion from the SEA Games and the Rufo Sanchez issue, this is the last thing football fans would want to hear.
