Azkals' TV Commercials -- Chibog na!

With the Azkals' rise to prominence comes the inevitable product endorsements. It is always fun to watch athletes in TV commercials, most especially those appearing in their first ones. You sometimes just feel something's not quite natural about the way they deliver their lines.

I really wonder what the Azkals' have in common with Silver Swan Soy Sauce though.

Ditto with Silver Swan Suka :

Because the Azkals' only burst into national consciousness last December 2010, we tend to forget that our main man, Phil Younghusband, has already appeared in TV commercials since 2009. This one is for Alaska, asking you to "Drink your food".

Although, back then, he DID have to remove his shirt for Fit n Right.

And another clip showing him leaving a trail of players in his wake. Thanks to Energo Health Energy Drink!

Nowadays, we see him more frequently, albeit now with his clothes on. This one is asking you to make "deliciously healthy choices".

Here, he's telling everyone that he's not a footballer after all!

Which leads us to a cameo appearance for Smart Communications here :

Did I miss anything?

A lot has been said on how these off-field endorsements take away the players focus on the pitch. Personally, I beg to differ. Playing football in this country doesn't exactly translate to megabucks for the players. Hence, we cannot begrudge them of their time in the spotlight, and the subsequent endorsement money that they may earn. In my personal opinion, they are making hay while the sun shines, and there is no shame in doing that.

The only area of concern is if footballers get too enamored in the celebrity lifestyle and neglect their football, be it practice and training. Without football, they are not likely to bag these endorsements. (Notice that all commercials have a direct link to the sport. Even Silver Swan Patis has James wearing his Azkals kit).

It is best that they remember this fact. Phil and James Younghusband were 'gwapo' before December 2010.
Are they more 'gwapo' now?

Yes, all because the Azkals are doing quite well, thank you very much.

As the Azkals popularity continue to soar, they have since been featured in two more commercials as of July 5, 2011. Here they are giving you the quick solution to muscle pain :

And the indefatigable Phil Younghusband with the love of his life, telling the world to show it off, which meant that he once again had to take off his clothes. Coming full circle, eh?

Updated August 23, 2011.
There's just no stopping the Azkals. Next up is an Oktoberfest commercial from San Miguel Beer by Ian Araneta, Aly Borromeo and Chieffy Caligdong. But the star of the commercial is Coach Michael Weiss who probably is the only person who can say 'Itong inumin nyo!' and make it sound like cuss words.

Will post the video as soon as I find a working Youtube link for this.

Yes, you read that right.

This is on the occasion of the 23rd Canon Lion City which is currently being held in Singapore.

The Singapore U-15 team defeated the visiting Premier League side Newcastle United's U-15 team by the score of 4-3, with the hosts finding the back of the net three times in the last three minutes to seal a come from behind victory. This game was televised live, according to Twitter friend @jasonloudy, who is in Singapore. The Football Association of Singapore seems to be giving tremendous support to their youth teams.

Video clip of the last two Singapore goals here:

Now, people will say this is only a U-15 tournament. I will respectfully disagree.

For instance, I would like to see how our own U-15 team will stack up against this Singapore U-15 team. Looking at the seven minute video clip, there is no mistaking the passing and the lively movement of the team. And to play teams with the caliber of Newcastle and Juventus, now that will only improve their game, wouldn't it?

Germany Women U-20 Team Posing for Playboy (NSFW)

This quite simply is Sepp Blatter's (wet) dream come true.

The Five young footballers are Annika Doppler (Bayern Munich), Kristina Gessat (FSV Gutersloh), Ivana Rudelic (Bayern), Julia Simic (Bayern) and Selina Wagner (Wolfsburg).

If their goal is to promote the Women's World Cup (due to start June 26), well they surely have our attention now.

Interesting fact according to OptaFranz : The German women haven’t conceded a single goal in 2011 so far in four friendlies.
This has nothing to do whatsoever with the video shoot. Enjoy!

Probable Azkals' Formation vs Sri Lanka. Your Thoughts?

Old time followers of the Azkals say we have never had a more talented squad representing the Philippines, and majority would agree. We have arguably the best players for each position with the starting eleven below :

From conversations with Coach Weiss, he seems to veer towards this starting eleven.

The only question would be if the team will perform as a unit, and if the whole team is greater than the sum of its parts. A two week sojourn away in the boondocks of Duren should take care of team chemistry off the pitch. Tuneup games should take care of things on the pitch.

A 4-1 victory over a selection from Duren, Germany is a good result. But this is only a friendly /  exhibition game, much like the Azkals' 3-4 defeat in the hands of the UFL All-Stars. The next games should give us a better indication as to the Azkals' true quality.

What do you think of the starting eleven above? Who would you rather start and what formation would you use?

Subs Bench would include Anton del Rosario, Roel Gener, Jason Sabio, Ian Araneta, Manny Ott and Dennis Cagara.

Can You Imagine Life BEFORE (Fat) Ronaldo?

I can't.

It was an honor watching him live in 2006, even if he was a tad overweight and a tad slow by then. Still, he will forever be THE Ronaldo for me and I credit him for getting me hooked to the beautiful game.

There's only ONE Ronaldo! The rest are just Cristianos.

Lost amongst the media hype on Sunday's Azkals game was the presentation of our 2011 Homeless World Cup during the halftime break. Coach Rudy del Rosario did the honors in introducing them in front of the grandstand.

Where : 19 East Bar and Grill, Sucat, Muntinlupa.

Meantime, here's the theme song for the 2010 Homeless World Cup Team. You might recognize the actors in the video. You might even recognize the lead singer.

And, here's something from the Kaya Green Band to whet your musical appetite. If you still don't recognize the lead singer at this point.......
